Galara, 2024

Artist: Nicole Monks

Location: Y Suites, Regent Street Redfern

Galara is a landmark sculpture developed by artist Nicole Monks in collaboration with Uncle Charles Madden, Luke Russell, Scott Luschwitz and Community members. The fishing harpoon is a replica of one made with community at a workshop held at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The artwork comprises a 36m tall fabricated aluminium spear made up from 5 x 6m sections, topped with a 6m tall 3 pronged barb. The community workshop spear was photographed and scaled up to full size and completed with a faux finish painted by a specialist team. The spear is halo lit with concealed LED lighting to the shaft and uplighting spots for the prongs.

“The fishing harpoon, the fish engraved on the façade and the silhouettes of the hunters on street level all create the entire story of galara.”
