Breathe, 2024

Artist: Nicole Monks & Maddison Gibbs

Location: Yeo Park, Ashfield

Breathe is a survival memorial located in Yeo Park, Ashfield, honouring First Nations’ resilience, reflection, and healing. The memorial, featuring 243 intricately carved sandstone boulders arranged in a spiral pattern and interwoven with native plants, guides visitors on a communal journey of unity and growth.

The sandstone was sourced from Inner West Council’s depot where sandstone flagstones and gutters were recycled for use in the artwork. For the 3 larger boulders 7 tonne sandstone blocks were purchased from Heritage Stoneworks NSW, one of Sydney’s stone repository’s. AG’s staff hand shaped all hemispherical sandstone pieces to a basic shape with final carving of Community generated artworks completed on site under the direction of the artists and community. For the installation of the boulders a unique gantry crane device was required to place the boulders using a clamping solution.
