Thou shalt not steel, 2025
Artist: Blak Douglas
Location: Mosman High School
Made up of anodised aluminium panels fixed to the brick exterior of the upgraded multiuse complex at Mosman High School, the piece acknowledges the more localised local dendroglyphs pertinent to the Boregegal and Cammeraigal cultures and their astonishing artistic depictions via rock engravings. Added to this narrative are (King) ‘Bungaree’ and a canoeist sourced from an early colonial lithograph.
Using laser cut aluminium, we see a rapid evolutionary story taking us from an existent Dreaming (time) through the industrial era until present. The aluminium sheets act as a metaphor of ‘containment’ / domesticating a time immemorial culture within the space of some 150yrs of colonisation. By retaining the ‘positives’ (laser cut), we present a veritable escape from that confinement towards a more positive future of education & appreciation.
