Signal Fire, 2024

Artist: Nicole Monks

Location: McKillop Park, Freshwater

Inspired by Aboriginal fire knowledge, ‘Signal Fire’ on Freshwater headland is an architectural place-maker that marks the beginning of the Northern Beaches Coast Walk. Providing space for reflection and unity through shared storytelling, honouring our past while embracing the future.

The artwork comprises a 10m x 7m footprint in greybox decking over a 316 stainless steel fabricated substructure, wrapped in fascia panels with 22 tallowwood raking beams incorporating LED lighting all connected to a precision ring frame with an overall height of approx 5m. Uplighting illuminates the beams contributing to the overall glow. The artwork is carefully arranged to create a contemporary fire formation, rounded and smoked on one side to reflect a smouldering fire. Imagery of banksias collected from the area by Community are burnt into the deck symbolising the local fire carrying methods. The central feature piece is a locally sourced sandstone boulder, shaped and finished to the artists direction.
