Firesticks, 2020

Artist: Jason Wing

Location: Queens Wharf Reserve, Parramatta

Firesticks is a memorial for Indigenous service personnel who have sacrificed their lives defending Australia on land and sea, in the past, present and future. The artwork installed in Queens Wharf Reserve along the Parramatta River comprises of 6 horizontal and 2 vertical corten steel canoes referencing the shape of a .303 calibre bullet. The horizontal canoes each have a sculptural stainless steel arrangement of firesticks in the centre with red LED uplighting illuminated the artwork in the evening. The artist collected branches and sticks locally which were used as the patterns for casting of the stainless steel components and rope embellishments. The vertical canoes are paired with a traditional Aboriginal fishing spear with a rope embellishment on the top of the post.
